Into the national park

Into the national park

Nature – walking

The national park of Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður spans just under 14% of Iceland, and it holds some of our nations most treasured nature sites. In this tour, we’ll venture into the eastern part of it and experience the raw energy of the highlands of East Iceland.

Our day starts with a visit to Snæfellsstofa which is a visitor center for the national park of Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður. There you will be introduced to the geology, wildlife and fauna on the eastern part of the national park. From there we’ll venture into the highlands and the national park. First, we’ll drive to the highland dam at Kárahnjúkar. The dam itself is the tallest one of its kind in Europe and stands over the canyon Hafrahvammaglúfur. From Kárahnjúkar we’ll go down to the canyon itself. Hafrahvammagljúfur, also known as Dimmugljúfur, is a jewel far to travelers ever behold. At a depth of 200 meters/650 feet and stretching on for about 8 km/5 miles, it is one of Iceland’s deepest and impressive canyons.

Operated: 15th of June until the 20th of September (subject to weather and road conditions). Bookings are by request. Keep in mind that how close you can get to the canyon is subject to water levels at the lagoon Hálslón.
